Amelia Earhart Scholarship Celebration

Updated: May 1, 2021

The Zontas of Miami Lakes January general meeting focused on celebrating Amelia Earhart's birthday. We awarded our Amelia Earhart Scholarship to Mariana Onhiveros, an undergraduate engineering major from Florida International University. Mariana, who will graduate in 2020, is President of the FIU Eco Engineering Club and an member of the Hispanic Professional Engineering Club.

Additionally, Leticia Figeroa, Assistant Principal at George T. Baker Aviation College, was our guest speaker. She spoke about the importance of this Miami- Dade public high school as an option for students interested in aviation- particularly young women. The program's opportunities for adults, and the successes of its graduates were also highlighted by Ms. Figeroa.

The Curtis Mansion was the perfect place for this celebration. Constructed in 1925 by aviation pioneer Glenn Hammond Curtiss (developer of the Miami suburbs of Hialeah, Opa-locka, and Miami Springs), this historic site was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 2001.
